How to use platform image resize presets

Follow the current YouTube, LinkedIn, X and Discord preset workflows, check aspect ratios and format before exporting, and understand why automatic crop and platform acceptance are not guaranteed.

  • No upload required for current tools
  • Your files stay private
  • No guaranteed third-party acceptance claims

What the platform preset pages do

The Tools directory currently links to seven public platform presets: YouTube thumbnail and banner, LinkedIn profile picture and banner, X header and profile picture, and Discord emoji. Each pre-fills starting dimensions and an output format in the same image workbench used elsewhere on CompressImageTo.

These starting values come from source records shown on the individual preset pages. The source, confidence and review date are displayed there; the stored review dates are not proof that a platform's requirements have remained unchanged. Confirm current requirements in the receiving platform before submission.

Step 1: open the preset for the actual destination

Open All tools, then choose the specific platform and asset type rather than guessing dimensions. A thumbnail and a channel banner on the same platform have different shapes and display behaviour.

For example, the site's YouTube Thumbnail preset starts at 3840 × 2160, YouTube Banner starts at 2560 × 1440, and Discord Emoji starts at 128 × 128. These are the site's source-defined defaults, not a guarantee that an upload will be accepted or displayed without cropping.

Step 2: select a suitable source and inspect planned dimensions

The preset opens with width and height fields filled, Resize and compress selected, and an editable Target size default of 1,024 KB. Choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP source image to see the planned result. The controls are editable before processing.

Keep aspect ratio is selected by default. When both target dimensions are entered, the tool fits the source inside that bounding rectangle while preserving its original proportions. This means a portrait source does not magically become an exactly filled widescreen thumbnail.

If the proportions do not match, prepare the correct composition or crop in another suitable workflow before using this resize tool. Simply unchecking Keep aspect ratio can distort the image.

Step 3: confirm format, size and safe composition

Check the selected output format and whether the destination accepts it. JPEG does not support transparency, while PNG can preserve it. A profile image may be shown in a circular mask; a banner may crop differently across devices. Keep critical logos and text away from edges.

Some preset pages describe the destination's size guidance; the workbench's 1,024 KB starting target is not necessarily that platform's maximum. If a platform requires a particular limit, change Target size to that supported KB value before processing.

Review the page's Source and review section rather than assuming that a displayed number is permanently current or endorsed by the platform.

Step 4: process and check the downloaded file

Select the original image, confirm the planned dimensions, then process using the workbench button. Inspect the result's Dimensions, Output format, Target status and Before/After preview. Download and inspect the saved file before uploading it to the destination.

Platform acceptance also depends on rules outside the converter, such as upload format, display cropping and any current size limit. The preset is a preparation aid, not an uploader.

Worked examples and troubleshooting

For a LinkedIn banner, open the LinkedIn Banner preset and check that your source already suits a wide banner. If it does not, preserving aspect ratio can result in a fitted size rather than a full 1584 × 396 composition. Compose/crop the source intentionally before resizing if that exact shape is needed.

For a Discord emoji, start from a simple, legible design and the 128 × 128 source-defined preset. The workbench may retain proportions rather than output an exact square when the source isn't square; inspect the dimensions after processing. Small detailed text may become unreadable at display size.

If the result looks stretched, turn Keep aspect ratio back on. If the image is smaller than expected, confirm the source's proportions and Planned output. If a platform rejects the file, recheck its current official requirements and compare the downloaded file's actual format, dimensions and size.

Quick answers

Will a preset automatically crop a banner to the exact shape?

No. The current workbench resizes and fits while preserving aspect ratio by default. It does not auto-crop or frame the subject.

Are the saved platform dimensions guaranteed to be current?

No. Individual pages show source and review information, and platforms can change their rules. Check the destination's latest instructions.

Does using a preset guarantee an upload passes?

No. It prepares an image locally; acceptance depends on the receiving platform and its current requirements.
